Nursing’s glossary
Nowadays, there is, a lot of words that we don’t know. That’s why glossaries are made to help people to understand words they not use to. For example, my field of study is Nursing, and of course there’s a lot of new words I’m learning about that profession
- O.R
- Operation room
- Example: The patient is in the O.R
- fr: Chambre opératoire
- Healthcare
- Healthcare is the improvement of health via the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, amelioration or cure of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in people
- Example: You should check your healthcare
- fr: Soins de santé
- Condition
- Diagnostic
- Example: What is my condition?
- fr: Condition
- Consent
- Consent is to give assent
- Example: I need you to sign this consent paper
- fr: Consentement
- Treatment
- the act or manner or an instance of treating someone or something
- Example: This is your treatment
- fr: Traitement
- Chart
- The medical documentation that follows a patient throughout a healthcare facility. It includes medical history, diagnoses, test results, dosage and timing of medications, and other relevant information.
- Example: Taking notes in the chart.
- fr: Diagramme de soins infermiers
- Code blue
- A medical emergency, often cardiac arrest, that requires immediate attention from a team of healthcare providers. Healthcare workers may shorten code blue to “coding.” Heart rate: The number of heartbeats a patient has per minute.

- The number of heartbeats a patient has per minute.
- Example: Let me check your heart rate
- fr: Rythme cardiaque
- Pain scale
- A numeric scale from one to ten that patients use to rate their level of pain. Some healthcare facilities use visual cues like faces to help patients rate their pain levels.
- Example: What is your pain on a scale of 1 to 10
- fr: Echelle de douleur
- Vital signs
- Basic indicators of a patient’s health that typically includes heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, pain level and blood pressure.

- catheter
- Any flexible, hollow tube used in medical procedures; most often refers to a tube used to drain urine from the bladder.
- Stethoscope
- An audio device that allows nurses to hear a patient’s pulse or take their blood pressure.
- Blood pressure
- Blood pressure measures the amount of force placed on a patient’s artery walls with each heartbeat. This is one of the standard vital signs nurses monitor for patients.

- Charge nurse
- A supervisory nurse who oversees other nurses in a particular hospital department.
- NCLEX
- Refers to the nursing exam one must pass to become either a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse
- Respiratory rate
- The number of breaths a patient takes per minute.
- Dialysis nursing
- A nursing specialty that focuses on patients who have kidney disease, are experiencing kidney failure or are undergoing dialysis treatments.
